Abstract
A vessel suitable for use in melting refractory metals such as uranium is made by slipcasting an aqueous suspension of uranium dioxide to the required shape, drying and firing the cast. The suspension may be made from the washed precipitate obtained by adding alkali to a hot aqueous solution of a uranic salt, e.g. sodium uranium chloride. The vessel so prepared may be used as a liner to an outer vessel of a refractory material such as magnesia, beryl, thoria or fireclay. The metal may be melted under fused sodium chloride &c. or in an inert atmosphere such as argon.
