Abstract
Uranium is produced by reaction of uranium trichloride with an alkali metal, e.g. sodium, potassium or lithium, or with an alkaline earth metal, e.g. calcium or barium. The reaction is carried out in a crucible wholly or partly formed of a refractory material which may be sintered, e.g. zirconium oxide beryllium oxide, thorium oxide or magnesium oxide. The crucible and its contents are placed in a container which is evacuated and filled with an inert gas, this operation preferably being repeated at least once. The crucible is then heated to initiate the reaction and the temperature is preferably maintained above the melting point of uranium metal for sufficient time, e.g. at least two hours, to allow the uranium to be produced in massive form. U.S.A. Specification 1,568,685 is referred to.
