Abstract

715,126. Dams &c. DEGEN, W. July 26, 1951 [July 27, 1950], No. 17722/51. Class 68(2) Dams &c. 1 are made watertight by means of flat prefabricated units made of plastic-elastic materials such as inorganic or organic rubbers, or non-ageing rubber substitutes such as polyvinyl chlorides &c. reinforced internally or on the surface, the units being joined together either by welding or the use of adhesives to form a seal 2 of large area which is placed on the surface to be sealed. The sealing units are protected against wave action by being covered with a layer 5 of the material used on the dam, and this material may also serve to secure the seal to the dam &c. With large areas or steep slopes it is advantageous to secure the units to the supporting work at spaced points e.g. by corrosion resistant bolts, or by dowel pins let into the dam 'and then connected to the seal or formed on the seal and then inserted into the dam. The securing means may be formed of metal. concrete, &c. and stuck on the seal by a phenol-formaldehyde condensation resin adhesive, any metal surface being previously treated with a phosphate coating if necessary, or by adhesives composed of artificial resin solutions such as silicones. Alternatively swallow-tail cavities may be formed in the underside of the units to be engaged by mating units on the dam. As shown the sealing unit 2 is secured at the bottom to a sill 3 on the rock bottom 4 which may be separated from the dam bottom by the surface 6 of the valley.
