Abstract

715,102. Controlling aircraft. MORR1SON, C. B. June 19, 1952 [April 21, 1951], No. 9914/52. Class 4 In an aircraft propelled by fluid reaction the rearwardly directed jet pipe is provided with additional branches and nozzles directed both upward and downward to act as a means for effecting upward and downward substantially vertical transtational movement of the aircraft so that the aircraft can take off vertically, fly horizontally and hover and land by this means. The jet pipe 9 is extended rearwardly by a horizontal extension 11 and vertical branches 10 and 12 in which are located respectively shutters i, 15 and 5 mounted on pivots 14, 23 and 13. The shutter 1 has an arm 2 and the shutter 5 has arms 4 and 6 fast therewith, the arms 2 and 4 being connected by a link 3 and the arm 6 having cables 7, 8 connected to a pilot's control member. The branch 12 carries an additional shutter 19, pivoted at 24 and connected by an arm 16, a link 17 and a further arm 20 to the shutter 15 which has an additional arm 18 connected by cables 21 and 22 to a servo motor responsive to a gyro or altimeter. During normal horizontal flight the shutters 15 and 5 remain closed with the shutters 1 and 19 open. To achieve a vertical take-off the valves 1 and 5 are operated so that they are respectively closed and open to direct the gases through branch 12. When the valve 5 is opened the gyroscope and servomotor are connected automatically to the cables 21 and 22, which to maintain the aircraft substantially level at a particular altitude, can open or close the shutters 15 and 19 in the appropriate sense. When the aircraft is taking off the cables 21 and 22 may be connected to the pilot's control member.
