951,373. Vertical take-off and landing aircraft. DORNIER-WERKE G.m.b.H. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 19, 1961], No. 46656/62. Heading B7G. A vertical take-off and landing aircraft has a battery of lifting engines 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP>, 5<SP>111</SP>, at least the front one of which has means for deflecting its jet rearwardly to deflect the jets of other engines away from the vertical to reduce ground erosion. The deflecting means, shown fitted to the front engine only, may comprise an eyelid (Fig. 2) hingedly mounted on the engine, or a curved deflector 10 (Fig. 3), which may form part of a nacelle in which the engines are mounted, and which, when required, is moved rearwardly and swung into position 10<SP>1</SP>. Alternatively, the engine may be tilted (Fig. 4) with cascades 11 adjustable either to deflect the jet downwardly or rearwardly as required. The engines may be fitted in a nacelle, as shown, or in the wings or in the fuselage, and are fitted with deflectors 8 by which their jets can be deflected by a few degrees.
