Abstract
958,548. Direct lift aircraft. G. A. MERRICKS. April 24, 1963 [Jan. 31, 1962], No. 3592/62. Headings B7G and B7W. An aircraft has an auxiliary power plant to be operated during crash landing, and means responsive to the altitude of the aircraft controls the direction of thrust of the plant so as to maintain the aircraft substantially level. In the Figure, a rocket motor 10 is mounted in the fuselage by a gimbal 13 below the centre of gravity 12, so as to be tiltable fore-and-aft or laterally by hydraulic devices controlled by valve mechanism 21 responsive to a gyro device 22, so that in an emergency the motor 9 can be started to provide lift, and attitude correction torques. The motor may be a ducted fan or a gas turbine engine. The discharge aperture in the fuselage may be normally closed by a door which is opened or blown away on starting the engine.
