Abstract

764,907. Controlling jet-propelled aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Nov. 17, 1953 [Nov. 25. 1952], No. 29868/52. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A jet propulsion plant is mounted in a wing nacelle 10 and the jet pipe 11 terminates at its rear end in a portion 12 movable axially by pneumatically-operated jacks 14 mounted within the nacelle 10 and having piston rods 15 connected to a fairing structure 16 secured externally of the portion 12. The piston rods 15 extend through tubular mounting struts 17 which support a series of axially-spaced annular dished-section guide vanes 18. A butterfly valve 19 is mounted within the portion 12 on a pivot 20 which carries a spring-loaded arm 22 connected to one end of a link rod 23. The other end of the link has a stop 25 which abuts a guide block 24 when the portion 12 is in the position shown to cause the valve 19 to close the rear end of the jet pipe and cause the gases to flow through the ducts exposed by the portion 12 when in its rearward position, the gases being deflected forwardly to provide a braking effect on the aircraft. When the jacks 14 are operated to move the portion 12 against the rear end of the pipe 11 the lateral ducts are blanked off and the valve 19 is opened to permit rearward flow of the gases. The valve 19 is mounted on an off-centre pivot so that the flow of gas holds it open. In a further embodiment, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), the jet pipe 11 extends rearwardly to a propelling nozzle and it is provided with diametrically opposed ports closed by slide valves, the ports being on the inner ends of forwardly inclined ducts which extend to further ports in the outer surface of the nacelle fairing opened and closed by hinged flaps operated by further jacks, vanes such as vanes 18 being used for deflection of the gases. The end of the jet pipe is provided with opposed hinged shutters to close the nozzle and in a still further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), these shutters may be associated with a valve such as valve 19. Provision is made for a flow of cooling air around the jet pipe such air being passed through the slide valves and opposed hinged shutters, which are double skinned for this purpose, when jet deflection is not taking place.
