745,720. Controlling jet-propelled aircratt. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. June 19, 1953 [July 8, 1952], No. 456/55. Divided out of 745,637. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] In a jet-propelled aircraft a braking reaction is obtained by surrounding the jet pipe 13 with a rotatable sleeve 31 formed with ports 33 which, by rotation of the sleeve, may be brought into and out of registry with ports 15 in the jet pipe. Bulkheads 35 in the nacelle fairing 11 define an annular chamber 34 having deflector plates 45 which are associated with further plates 40 mounted in outlet nozzles each pivoted at 38 to the nacelle structure and operated by a jack 46. Each nozzle comprises side walls 37 and an outer wall 36 which normally lies flush with the outer skin of the nacelle, and in the position shown the nozzle provides an outlet 39 in a forwardly facing direction for exhaust gases from the ports 15, 33. A butterfly valve 19 is mounted in the rear end of the jet pipe and is operated by a jack and the sleeve 31 is operated through gearing 42 by a motor 44, the jacks 30 and 46 and the motor 44 being so associated that as the valve 19 moves to restrict the rearward flow of gas the sleeve is rotated to bring the ports 15 and 33 into registry and the outlets 39 are opened. Instead of the butterfly valve 19, a device of the kind shown in Specification 598,183 may be used to restrict the flow of gas through the nozzle.
