Abstract
Synthetic folic acid is separated from impurities associated therewith by mixing crude folic acid with an aqueous solution of an alkali-metal hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide to form an aqueous alkaline solution of alkali-metal or ammonium folate having dissolved therein between about 3 and about 10 grams of folic acid per litre, mixing the alkali-metal or ammonium folate solution with a solid adsorbent consisting of calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide, zinc carbonate or cadmium carbonate, or mixtures thereof, at room temperature to adsorb a substantial portion of the impurities present in the solution on the solid adsorbent while the alkali-metal or ammonium folate remains in solution, separating the solid adsorbent and impurities adsorbed thereon from the solution of the alkali-metal or ammonium folate, and precipitating purified folic acid from the thusclarified solution by acidification. It is preferable to use about three moles of sodium hydroxide per mole of folic acid and to employ finely-divided magnesium hydroxide as the adsorbent. The crude folic acid may contain about 65 to 85 per cent of folic acid itself. The aqueous solution may contain 8 grams of folic acid per litre. The quantity of adsorbent added may be varied over a wide range, a suitable figure being about one gram of adsorbent per gram of folic acid. The folic acid may be recovered from the purified alkaline solution by adjusting the pH to approximately 3, e.g. with hydrochloric acid, whereupon the folic acid precipitates. It is preferable to dilute the alkaline solution of purified folic acid to a concentration of about 3 grams of folic acid per litre, heat the solution to about 90 DEG to 95 DEG C. and then adjust the pH of the hot solution to approximately 3 with hydrochloric acid, the folic acid slowly precipitating on cooling. A number of detailed examples are given.
