Abstract

Finely divided calcium carbonate, suitable as a filler for rubber and having a disturbed calcite crystal lattice, is prepared by reacting at 0 DEG to 50 DEG C., preferably at below 30 DEG C., an aqueous Ca(OH)2 suspension containing an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of nitrilotriacetic acid with a gas containing CO2. The suspension preferably contains not more than 1 mol. of Ca(OH)2 per litre, and the CO2-containing gas may be purified combustion gas or lime-kiln gas. CO2 should preferably still be present in the gas after use. 0,01 to 2% by weight of sodium or calcium nitrilotriacetate may be used. The potassium and barium salts are also referred to. In Example 1, a comparison is drawn between the properties of the precipitated CaCO3 obtained with and without the addition of sodium nitrilotriacetate to the Ca(OH)2 suspension. The precipitation of CaCO3 in the presence of polyphosphates, polybasic hydroxycarboxylic acids, and ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid is referred to.
