Abstract
A solution of impure selenious acid is purified by precipitation therein of an adsorbent, e.g. a basic aluminium compound, such as aluminium hydroxide, or ferric hydroxide. Thus crude selenium is oxidized to selenium dioxide, which is dissolved in water. The pH of this solution is adjusted to 6 or 6.5 by adding ammonium hydroxide and aluminium sulphate solution is then added. After standing for 24 hours the supernatant liquid is removed, and the selenium recovered by passing sulphur dioxide through the warmed filtrate. The precipitation of the adsorbent is preferably effected in the presence of sulphide ions, e.g. by adding ammonium sulphide liquor before the precipitation.
