Abstract

712,774. Sleeve couplings. GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. Dec. 31, 1952, [Jan. 1, 1952.] No. 87/52. Class 38(I). A method of joining two stranded cables comprises tinning and then compressing a length A of each cable end, thus producing a shoulder 2, and cutting off the first layer of wires for part of this length to produce a step 3. A metal ferrule 5, having a groove II of a depth decreasing towards each end formed in its inner back surface, is forced round the abutting cable ends so that its sides 6 leave a slot 12. The ends of the ferrule about the shoulders 2, and intermediate steps 10 in the ferrule fit the steps 3. Molten metal is poured through the slot 12 to fill the groove 11 and any spaces between the ferrule and the cable. Insulating tap is wound round the ferrule when the joint is completed. More than one step 3 may be produced by cutting back the second and futher layers of the compressed cables at short distances from one another. A preliminary compressing operation may be performed in a stranding die to reduce the overall diameter by deformation of the outer surface of the first layer of wires.
