Abstract
712,586. Roof truss. SHEPPARD, W. P. Sept. 15, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 27449/52. Class 20 (4) A pre-stressed concrete roof truss, capable of easy and quick assembly, comprises a pair of rafters 1 joined at the apex by bolts 24 and twin gusset plates 7, a tie beam connected between the lower ends of the rafters and having its two parts 2 connected by a turnbuckle tensioning device 5, and a vertical tie rod 16 anchored at one end to a bolt 15 connecting the ridge gusset plates 7 and at the other end to the turnbuckle 5. Oppositely threaded screws 6 on the turnbuckle 5 engage in tapped holes in U-shaped metal straps 3 secured to the adjacent ends of the parts 2, the turnbuckle being adjusted after the truss has been erected and the rod 16 being finally secured to the turnbuckle by nuts 20. The outer ends of the parts 2 are joined to the lower ends of the rafters 1 by twin foot plates 22 and bolts 30, the foot plates being secured to a wall capping 21 by bolts, not shown, passing through lugs 29 on the plates 22. Pairs of plates 32 and bolts 33 are employed to secure purlins to the truss, shorter bolts 33 being secured to lugs 34 on the plates to anchor purlins at the feet of the truss.
