The springs are provided with links 62, 64, 66 of differing effective lengths so that the springs come into operation in that order When the platform rises, handle 74 is operated to pump fluid into cylinder 70 so that crosshead 68 moves down and stretches additional springs 58 to assist the raising of the platform. It permits, also, the use of materials of differing weights. Alternatively several such pistons may be employed and, be controlled by a single control, the weight of material on the platform being indicated by an indicator
