711,841. Latch needles for knitting machines. MELLOR, BROMLEY &. CO., Ltd. June 14, 1951 [July 3, 1950], No. 16543/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 74 (2) [Also in Group XXV; The pin supporting the latch in the slot of a latch needle for a, knitting machine has its central latch supporting portion of a diametral dimension larger-than its end portions engaged by the side walls or cheeks of the slot to retain it in position. The central portion may be of circular or square shape and the end portions may be respectively of square or circular shape engaging in aligned holes in the side walls. If, desired the end portions may have recesses or be reversely chamfered into which or behind which the material of the side walls is forced after assembly to secure the pin in position. Alternatively the pin may be formed with conical bearing surfaces at each end which' engage corresponding recesses in the side walls. Also the side walls may be indented to grip the erids of a pin which may be a recessed rod or tube. A further arrangement comprises filling a hollow pin with soft metal such as brass insert. ing it in the aperture of the latch and enclosing the pin and latch between the side walls whereafter during' tempering of' the needle the soft metal melts and secures the pin in position.
