Abstract

711,383. Suction cleaner filter bags. HOOVER, Ltd. Dec. 6, 1951 [Dec. 12, 1950; Dec. 12, 1950], No. 28594/51. Classes 8 (1) and 8 (2). The inlet 47, Fig. 2, of the filter bag 46 of a handle propelled fan suction cleaner is clamped around an adapter 18 connected to the fan exhaust duct 15, Fig. 3, by means which are automatically engaged when the adapter 18 is moved to a position adjacent the handle 16, and the adapter is retained in this position so as to pivot with the handle. The handle 16 is formed with a bail 24 having one arm 25 seated in a bearing 26 and the other arm journaled on a pivot pin 21 carried by one limb 19 of the adapter 18 which carries a second limb 20 around which the filter bag neck is clamped by engagement of a rubber pad 53 at one end of a leaf spring 52 secured to the handle bail 24 with a cushioned recess 50 into which the bag neck is gathered after first being located by a recess 48 and an adapter projection 49. The adapter and hence the bag 46 are held adjacent the handle 16 so as to pivot therewith about the common pin 21 by a counterbalancing torsion spring 34 the free end 33 of which normally engages a sliding detent 29 carried by the adapter but encounters a fixed stop 36 just before the handle reaches a vertical storage position whereupon the adapter is freed and on moving the latter away---from the handle the detent 29 is shifted clear of the spring end 33 by a cam 45 carried by the bail 24 to assume a horizontal filter-bag-renewing position. A latch spring 55 normally engages the rear edge of a slider bridge 30 and holds the adapter 18 up to the handle, and the latter is locked when in the storage position by the engagement in a notch 42 of a back sector 43 of a detent 41 on a footoperated lever 38. The bag 46 which is of paper has an appearance cover 51. In a modification the counterbalancing spring acts directly between the cleaner body and the handle in the conventional manner and the adapter is held adjacent the handle by a detent carried thereby and engaging a recess in the adapter through an opening in the neck of the filter.
