Class 130 In a continuous-rod machine in which a tobacco stream is conveyed upwards round the periphery of a conveyer disc 1 rotating about a horizontal axis, between a paper web 10 on the periphery and an outer supporting belt 3, the belt 3 is caused, by co-action with suitable beltprofiling means provided in front of and around the disc 1, to have a laterally waved profile as it passes round the disc 1 whereby the belt surround the stream and confines it to the central part only of the web. As shown, a belt-profiling former 6 is part of the trough 5 into which tobacco is showered to form the stream, and is shaped as in Fig. 4 so that the sides 3a of the belt 3 are clear of the stream T. On passing on to the disc 1 the belt tension in combination with the shape of the disc periphery causes the parts 3c, Fig. 7, of the belt to form projecting ribs which press down on. the web 10 to achieve the purpose of the invention. The lateral section of the periphery of the disc 1 may be a concave curve, Fig. 7, with or without a flat bottom to receive the paper 10. The periphery may have, to receive the paper, a recess 1a, Fig. 8, which may extend sufficiently to retain the edges of the belt 3 also, or these may be accommodated in further recesses 1b. Where such recesses are provided the outer portions 1, Fig. 8, of the periphery may be of V-shape in section as shown, axially disposed, or rounded or bevelled down, and guide rolls or strips 14 may be provided where the belt 3 runs. on to and off the disc 1. The ribs 3c may be additionally held down on the disc periphery by circular section guides fitting into the ribs. Ribs 1c, Fig. 13, may be provided on the disc 1, with or without recesses 1b, to assist in a wave-like belt profile formation. On running off the disc 1 on to a support 11a recessed to receive the web 10 the belt 3 passes over a roller 16 having a groove 16b, Fig. 15, receiving the tobacco-holding portion of the belt, and which may have recesses 16d corresponding to the recesses 1b or be formed with projecting circumferential ribs on either side of the groove 16b. The direction of movement of the belt 3 is then reversed by rollers 7, 8 which may have grooves of successively diminishing size, and the belt returns over cylindrical rollers 9. The roller 7 may be omitted. The tobacco stream finally enters apparatus 11 which folds the paper 10 round it to form a cigarette rod. A scraper 20 is provided to clean the belt 3. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the machine is provided with a further endless belt which passes round the periphery of the disc 1 between it and the paper web and carries the web over rollers into the rod-forming apparatus, the rollers 7 and 8 being dispensed with and the roller 16 replaced by a roller 9.
