Abstract

<PICT:0710903/III/1> <PICT:0710903/III/2> Apparatus (Figs. 1 and 2) for subjecting a liquid to ultraviolet radiation, e.g. for sterilizing water or fruit juice, comprises concentric jackets 1 and 4 forming a chamber there-between, an inlet pipe 2 for the liquid near one end of the jacket 1 and an outlet pipe 3 for the liquid at the other end, the inner jacket 4 being of ultraviolet ray transmissive material, an ultraviolet lamp 40 within the inner jacket 4, a ferrule 17 which is clamped to one end of the jacket 4 and has a rotatable shaft 22 extending from the ferrule along the line of the axis of the jacket 4 and through an end wall of the jacket 1, an arm 28 connected to and rotatable with the shaft, a wiper 31 pivotally mounted on the arm, and a band clamp 32 carried by the wiper and drawn around the jacket 4. The wiper is for removing from the outer surface of the jacket 4 any deposit from the liquid being irradiated, and is manually operated by a knob 35 at the outer end of the shaft 22.
