Abstract

<PICT:0639467/III/1> In apparatus for irradiating fluids of the type wherein the fluid is passed between a pair of coaxial tubes 1, 3 surrounding the irradiating source 4, the inner tube 3 being transparent and the outer tube 1 opaque to the radiation, the outer tube is made of metal, e.g. stainless steel, and is in close contact with the inner tube and the fluid is passed through a plurality of channels 2, preferably helicoidal and of triangular cross-section, grooved in the inner surface of the metal tube. The apparatus may be employed for sterilizing and activating milk and wine by treatment with ultra-violet rays and also for promoting gaseous chemical syntheses. An assembly of coaxial tubes may be employed in series or parallel.
