Abstract

Liquids are irradiated with active rays by a process which includes the steps of rapidly rotating a vertical tubular member, introducing the liquid to be treated against the upper area of the inside wall of the member, producing a downwardly flowing uniformly thin film on the inner surface of the member due to the rotation, and maintaining the film by centrifugal force while treating it with active rays emanating from a source arranged within the tubular member. The apparatus may comprise a stainless steel open-ended tube 1 rotating on <PICT:0655198/III/1> ball bearings 2, the liquid being fed by air pressure at a controlled rate through a tube 15 and liquid feed needle 16, and the radiation being provided by an ultra-violet lamp 5. The irradiated liquid collects in a cup 10. Examples relate to the sterilization of a liquid suspension of E. Coli.; the inactivation of a suspension in normal saline of rabies virus from goat brain tissue, of equine encephalomyclitis virus, and of mink distemper virus; the production of a human rabies vaccine from infected rabbit brain tissue; the sterilization of serums contaminated with various bacteria and viruses; and the sterilization of antigens (tuberculin) in each case employing a 30-watt ultra-violet lamp. The rates of flow of liquid and speed of rotation are given in the examples. The preferred radiation has a wave length of 2537 . The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the employment of a rotating cylinder made of ray-penetratable substances, the radiation source being located outside the cylinder or both inside and outside the cylinder. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
