Class 61 [Also in Group XXX] Each of a plurality of gripping devices for lifting bottles or other containers comprises a tubular element 5 (Figs. 1 and 3) which is mounted on the lower end of a pipe 1 depending from a flame common to all the gripping devices and which is distended (Fig. 1) or compressed (Fig. 3) by fluid pressure to grip the inner or outer wall of the container. In the construction of Fig. 3 a sleeve 5 of caoutchouc is subjected to compressed air on its outer sprface so that it bulges inwardly to grip the outside of the neck of a bottle 2. The sleeve 5 is located by a metal member 11, a metal insert 12, and a flange formed on a bell shaped member 8 screwed to a flange 3 on the pipe 1. In the construction of Fig. 1 a tube 5 of caoutchouc is sealed to flanges 3, 4 on a pipe 1 and is expanded to grip the inside of a neck of a bottle 2 by compressed air passing from a lateral hole 6 in the pipe to the interior of the tube. A pilot boss 7 on the flange 4 guides the device into the bottle. The apparatus may be suspended from an overhead rail and arranged for automatic working.
