Abstract

Leuco-sulphuric esters of anthraquinone acridones are obtained by treating the corresponding 1-arylamino-2-carboxyanthraquinone with iron, zinc, or cadmium and the sulphur trioxide addition product of a tertiary amine of dissociation constant at least 1 X 10-7. An inert solvent may be present. In examples, chlorsulphonic acid is added to a mixture of chlorobenzene and (1) trimethylamine, (2) triethylamine, or (3) tripropylamine, to form the sulphur trioxide addition products which are then reacted without separation with 1-(b -naphthylamino)-2-carboxyanthraquinone and one of the three metals. Also in examples, chlorsulphonic acid is added to triethylamine in chlorobenzene and the product reacted with zinc dust and (4)1-(p-anisidino)-2-carboxy-anthraquinone, (5) 1-(m-toluidino)-2-carboxy-anthraquinone, (6) 2-carboxy-1.2\sv-dianthrimide.
