Abstract

709,790. Photo-electric overtaking warning. CIMEL. June 6, 1952 [June 7, 1951], No. 14310/52. Class 40 (3) In a device for signalling to the driver of a vehicle that the driver of a following veh'cle wishes to overtake, a pair of temperature sensitive resistors are situated so that one receives the infra-red content of the headlights of the following vehicle, the resistors being connected in a normally balanced circuit unbalance of which operates an indicator. As shown the resistors 2, 3 of which resistor 2 is situated at the focus of a reflector 1 form two arms of a bridge circuit the other two arms of which are constituted by the section each side of the slider of a potentiometer 4. Potential is applied to the bridge through the slider and at the junction of the resistors. Across the other diagonal of the bridge is connected a relay 6 which is operated when the bridge is unbalanced by the infra-red ray focused on to resistor 2. Relay 6 in turn operates a re'ay 8 which locks and lights a "wait-" lamp 14 at the tail of the vehicle and a warning lamp 15 on the instrument panel. When the driver of the leading vehicle is ready to be overtaken he operates switch 11 breaking the circuit of relay 8, extinguishing "wait" lamp 14 and warning lamp 15 and lighting an "overtake" lamp 16 at the rear of the vehicle. As shown in Fig. 3 the temperature sensitive resistors are mounted in glass bulbs 21. Resistor 2 is at the focus of a concave mirror 1. Above the glass sheet 23 which closes the housing 5 is the " wait " lamp (not shown) ; below it is the " overtake lamp. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), filament 2 is situated at the focus of a lens.
