Abstract

647,499. Road traffic signals on vehicles. BENGTSSON, S. W. Sept. 19, 1947, No. 25581. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1946. [Class 118 (ii)] A vehicle direction-indicator comprises two spaced lamps in a common holder and a circuit arrangement whereby a left or right-hand turn may be indicated by a steady light from one lamp in conjunction with a flashing light from the other. Provision is also made to light or flash both lamps together to indicate a stop. The two lamps 12, 13 are mounted in a conspicuous position on the vehicle and are connected in a circuit comprising a three-position manual switch A and a thermally-operated automatic flasher switch B. The circuit arrangement is such that, when switch B is thrown to the right, contacts 80, 37, 81 and 82, 38, 83 are made and lamp 13 is connected to source 20 through flasher switch B and lamp 12 is connected direct to the source, the steady light from 12 in conjunction with the flashing light from 13 thereby indicating a right turn. The reverse conditions are established by throwing switch B to the left. If switch B is thrown to the lower position contacts 84, 85 and 86 are closed through contact 39 and both lamps light steadily to indicate a stop. This last condition is also obtained upon operation of the foot brake which closes contacts 121, 122, 123 through contact 120. If desired, the circuit may be adapted to include the flasher switch for the stop signal. Tell-tale lamps in series with lamps 12 and 13 may be provided on the instrument board.
