Abstract

709,638. Rotary heat-exchangers for cooling air. CROSSLEY BROS., Ltd., CARTER, H. D., and HENSHALL, S. H. Sept. 11, 1952 [Sept. 11, 1951], No. 21380/51. Class 64(1) [Also in Group XXVII] in a two- or four-stroke diesel engine supplied with cooled scavenging and charging air, the cooling is effected in a rotary heat-exchanger b, Fig. 1, through any portion of which successively passes the scavenging and charging air and the atmospheric cooling air. The scavenging and charging air enters at a and leaves at c whilst atmospheric air enters at d and leaves at e, both streams flowing through the heat-exchanger b; the flow of atmospheric air is assisted by fan f. The heatexchanger b, which is mounted on a shaft k, comprises a matrix of wire gauze or other material having passages or cells therein, the opposite surfaces of the element being divided by a spring-loaded cross-member g to separate the two streams; the peripheral edge of the heatexchanger is sealed by a ring i and the ends of the members g have spring-loaded pads in contact therewith. In a modification, the heat-exchanger b, Fig. 3, is in the form of a cylinder in the interior of which is a cross-member m; the inlets a, d and outlets c, e of both air streams are approximately at right angles. The member m is provided with spring-loaded seals and the heat-exchanger b is rigid with end pieces p which revolve in casing parts q through which air streams pass.
