Class 39 (3) [Also in Group VIII] In a smoothing iron of the kind comprising handle and body portions 1, 2 moulded or otherwise formed as a unitary structure which is secured to a sole plate 6, a metal screen 37 is secured within the body portion so as to form an air-spaced partition between the lower and upper regions of the body whereby heating of the handle by convection and/or radiation is reduced. The screen 37 may be a thin sheet of mild steel or aluminium, and preferably has its lower surface made reflective by plating or polishing. It is secured by screws 44, 45 to a shoulder 42 and depending stud 43. Heating of the handle is further reduced by providing slots or apertures in the unitary structure, e.g. as at 46, and further slots (not shown) may be provided beneath thumb rests provided on the handle. Direct heat conduction is reduced by providing a gap 30 between the sole plate 6 and body portion 2. The unitary structure may be moulded from a thermosetting resin such as phenol formaldehyde and is secured to a clamping plate 11 for an electric heating element (not shown) by a stud 31a, spacing collar 33 and nut 31. In addition, a member 34 mounted at the rear of the sole plate is bolted to the rear of the body 2. A removable cover plate 9 encloses electric connections and an indicator lamp 28.
