[Class 138(ii)] [Also in Group XI] The handle 19 of an electrically heated iron is of substantially flat form adapted to be gripped on opposite sides and provide a rest for the palm of the hand, and its undersurface is at least as large as the upper surface of the smoothing portion 11 of the iron and is spaced therefrom by heatdissipating means 16. The handle, which may be of wood, has a groove 20 along two sides, and is secured by screws 22 to the heat-dissipating means 16, which are in the form of four metal plates separated by washers 17. A sheet 21 of asbestos or other heat-insulating material is interposed between the handle 19 and the uppermost of the plates 16. The plates 16 are secured by screws 18 to the smoothing portion 11, which is provided with a recess 12 for accommodating a heating-element 13, insulation sheets 15 and a compression block 14; if desired, a heat-insulating plate may also be provided between the block 14 and lowest plate 16. The handle 19 is provided with a recess 23 for housing a terminal block 24, and this recess is only partially closed on its undersurface by the sheet 21 so as to provide for cooling the terminal block 24. If desired, the handle may be formed in two parts, with the recess 23 provided in the lower part. The wire lead 26 from the terminal block 24 to the heating-element 13 passes through a series of insulating beads 27 disposed in apertures in the plates 16, and a central aperture may also be provided in each plate 16 to facilitate cooling of this lead. A detachable closure for the smoothing portion may, when the iron is in use, be inverted and serve as a stand for the iron.
