Abstract

In a process for the recovery of sulphur from spent oxide, or other material containing sulphur contaminated with tarry organic matter, by treating the material with a solvent for sulphur and recovering the sulphur from the extract solution, the extract solution is treated, prior to the recovery of the sulphur therefrom, with ferric chloride to render insoluble the tarry organic matter which is then separated from the extract solution. The amount of ferric chloride employed is preferably at least twice the weight of the tarry matter to be removed. The spent oxide may be treated with a solvent for sulphur in known manner, for example with carbon disulphide at room temperature or with benzene, toluene or benzole at a raised temperature. The treatment of the extract solution with ferric chloride may be carried out at any temperature ranging from room temperature to the boiling point of the solvent.
