Abstract

Platinum is recovered from used platinum-containing catalyst by treating the catalyst at elevated temperature with a gaseous agent capable of forming a volatile platinum carbonyl chloride complex, and separating and decomposing the volatile complex to recover substantially pure platinum. The gaseous agent may be phosgene or a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and carbon dioxide. Treatment may take place at 450-800 DEG F. for 5-60 minutes. The effluent gas containing the platinum complex may be led into water and metallic platinum obtained by reduction with hydrogen provided by the addition of metallic magnesium; alternatively the platinum may be precipitated by addition of hydrogen sulphide, followed by filtering off and igniting the precipitate. Another method for recovering platinum from the effluent gas is to heat the gas in a decomposition zone, the platinum if desired being deposited on a granular material circulating through the zone. A platinum on alumina catalyst containing less than 2 per cent platinum may be treated; the alumina remaining in the treating zone may be washed, dried and reimpregnated with platinum. The metallic platinum recovered may also be used in the formation of new catalyst.ALSO:Platinum is recovered from used platinum-containing catalyst by treating the catalyst at elevated temperature with a gaseous agent capable of forming a volatile platinum carbonyl chloride complex, and separating and decomposing the volatile complex to recover substantially pure platinum.
