Abstract
Carbon black obtained by the decomposition of carbon monoxide using iron-containing catalysts is freed from iron, particularly in the form of iron carbide, by treatment with chlorine, hydrogen chloride or mixtures thereof, which may be moist, at temperatures between 400 and 1250 DEG C. The process may be carried out in a crucible furnace or in a rotary tube furnace, the temperature preferably being increased towards the end of the reaction to remove the chlorides formed, together with intermittent or complete stoppage of the chlorine stream. The reaction products may also be removed by a stream of inert gas or in vacuo. Preferably however, the carbon black is scattered through a uniformly heated stream of chlorine &c., removing in countercurrent and final removal of chloride and adsorped chlorine is obtained by spraying through an inert gas atmosphere, e.g. hydrogen or nitrogen, with the addition of steam if required. The unused chlorine &c., may be recycled. The impurities (up to 6 per cent) may be reduced to about 0,1 per cent, and the product is suitable for use in the printing ink, lacquer or rubber industries.
