Abstract

Dilute aqueous sulphuric acid contaminated with carbonaceous material is concentrated from 45-50 per cent. to 90-98 per cent. strength by concentrating to an intermediate strength of 65-70 per cent., washing with a non-reactive wash oil to remove the carbonaceous material, and finally concentrating to 90-98 per cent. strength. The wash oil may be a mixture containing 10-20 per cent. of pine oil and 90-80 per cent. of kerosene, or "oxo" alcohol bottoms, and may be used in an amount of 0.2-5 per cent., preferably 0.5-1 per cent. The acid of intermediate acid strength may be at a temperature of 50-70 DEG C. before mixing with the wash oil.
