708,673. Centrifugal - separators. MAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR KOLENBEWERKING STAMICARBON, N. V. Jan. 14, 1952 [Jan. 19, 1951], No. 1087/52. Class 23 [Also in Group XXIX] To prevent intermingling of the fractions collected in the discharge chambers of a multi-cell hydrocyclone or a multicell vortex chamber should a cell or cells become blocked, the flow from the discharge chambers is regulated so that the pressure in any chamber does not differ by more than 10 per cent. from the mean of the pressures in the chambers at the time. Suspension to be separated is tangentially injected into the cells 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, and the fractions collect in chambers ' 7, 10 having discharge pipes 11, 12 communicating with valves 13, 14 which restrict the flow of air from pipes 23, 22 in accordance with the pressures prevailing in the chambers. Differences in pressures in the chambers 7, 10 result in differences in pressures in the pipes 23, 22 which cause a device 24 to regulate the air pressure in a pipe 25 connected to a valve 26 in the discharge pipe 11, the arrangement being such that higher pressure in the chamber 10 closes the valve 26 to increase the pressure in the chamber 7, and lower pressure in the chamber 10 opens the valve 26 to decrease the pressure in the chamber 7. The valve 26 may be dispensed with and the device 24 may operate a signal in which case the regulation of the pressures in the chambers is made manually.
