Abstract
726,388. Centrifugal separators. STAMICARBON N.V. July 27, 1953 [July 28, 1952], No. 20813/53. Class 23. Particles dispersed in a gas are passed through a chamber having a single axial outlet and one or more inlets which cause the dispersion to whirl within the chamber to precipitate the particles on the chamber wall, gas and precipitated particles discharging together through the outlet being subsequently separated. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the dispersion enters the chamber 21 through an inlet 22 and the gas and particles pass through the outlet 20 to a further chamber 24 having outlets 26, 28 for the gas and particles respectively. Should the particles comprise viscous material or solids, liquid may be supplied through a pipe 25 to promote the flow of the precipitated particles along the chamber wall towards the outlet. In multi-cell separators a number of chambers are arranged in or on a partition dividing a vessel into two compartments, the chambers having inlets communicating with one compartment and outlets which discharge into the other compartment. In the multi-cell separator shown in Fig. 5D, a number of chambers 52 are arranged to divide a vessel 51 into two compartments, the dispersion entering through a conduit 49, gas leaving by a conduit 50, and the particles discharging through an outlet 55. The chambers may be made from glass or moulded materials and the inlet area should not be greater than the area of the outlet. Dimensions and performance figures are given in the Specification.
