Abstract

708,527. Pipe couplings. STRAUS, M. Dec. 11, 1950 [Dec. 12, 1949], No. 30254/50. Class 99 (1). A claw coupling engaged by relative rotation of the parts has like coupling members each comprising a casing 1, a spring-loaded valve member 12, and a rotatable valve-actuating ring member 3 having a pair of claws 7 engaged by a gapped flange of a ring 4 secured to the casing 1. Each claw 7 engages the adjacent recess 8, Fig. 3, of the coacting ring. Helical cam surfaces 17 on the rings 3 engage shoulders 19 on the valve spiders 13 so that relative rotation of the rings 3, 4 to couple the parts together opens the valves. The joint is sealed by a packing ring 10 and cup washers 6. In a modification each valve comprises a ball member 21 having a bore 20, a pivot pin 27, and a pair of actuating pins 24 of which one is located in a recess in the casing and the other in a recess in the ring 3. Relative rotation of rings 3, 4 to effect coupling aligns the bores 20 with the openings in the casings. Additional packing rings 22 are provided.
