Class 29 In absorption apparatus of the continuous-cycle inert gas type the liquid heat-exchanger 14, 15 located within the insulation 19 of the boiler comprises parallel conduits having their axes disposed substantially vertically. The heating tube 10, adapted to receive an electric heating cartridge through a tube 10a thermally separated from the tube 10, has welded to it the expeller conduit 12, 13 and the pump tube 11 which draws strong liquor from the outer pipe 14 of the liquid heat-exchanger formed as a U-tube connected to the absorber vessel 16. The weak liquor pipe 15 passes through the absorber vessel to deliver additional heat to the strong solution. In a modification, Fig. 2, the pump tube 11 delivers weak liquor into an extension of the pipe 15 of the liquid heat-exchanger, the pump vapours passing downwardly through the outer conduit and a pipe 20, in which they are analysed, to the vapour conduit 18. After passing through the absorber vessel 16 the weak liquor pipe 15 is connected to a jacket 22 around the rich gas pipe 23. In a further modification, Fig. 3, baffles 24 are arranged in the outer conduit 14 of the liquid heat-exchanger to which strong liquor is supplied by a pipe 17 and passes into the expeller tube 12 by a pipe 20. Vapour from the pump pipe 11 passes through a return pipe 26 and the pipe 20 to the vapour pipe 18. In a further modification the weak liquor pipe 15 and the expeller pipe 12 form together a U-tube the limb of which formed by the pipe 15 is enclosed in a jacket to which strong liquor is supplied at the top. The bottom of the jacket is connected to the pump pipe which delivers strong liquor to the top of the expeller pipe 12.
