708,266. Jet propulsion plant. SOC. D'ETUDE DE LA PROPULSION PAR REACTION. May 1, 1951 [May 11, 1950], No. 10238/51. Class 110(3) A ram jet engine has a combustion chamber having an inlet section in the form of an unrestricted diverging cone free from cross webs and an outlet section equal in area to about 0.6 to 1.0 times the area of the maximum interior cross-section of the chamber and a fuel feed capable of adjustment so that at normal operating speed of the engine the calorific intensity is below 0.5 which intensity may rise if the speed falls below normal calorific intensity is defined as the quantity of heat actually obtained divided by the quantity of heat that would be obtained if the air/fuel ratio had been stochiometric. In the arrangement shown the exit nozzle area S 3 is 0.8 x S 2 the maximum cross-sectional area of the combustion chamber and the nozzle is formed as a converging shape a which merges into a cylinder b.
