Abstract
670,933. Charging; cooling and silencing exhaust; carburetting apparatus, LEGROS, R. G. May 24, 1950 [May 30, 1949], No. 13025/50. Classes 7(ii) and 7(iii) The pressure of air delivered to the normal air inlet of an internal combustion engine mounted on a motor vehicle or aircraft is increased by the provision of an open-ended hollow body B, Fig. 1, having one end connected to the normal air inlet 2, the other end 1, preferably of at least twice the cross-section of the inlet 2, opening in the direction of movement of the vehicle or craft, and the intermediate portion shaped so as to have a maximum crosssection 6 at least five times that of the end 1 and preferably situated nearer to that end than to the end 2. As shown, applied to an engine having a carburetter 3, the carburetter and the fuel supply tank thereto are pressurized by connecting the otherwise sealed air spaces of the carburetter float chamber and the tank to a pipe 7 taken from the body 5 slightly to the rear of the maximum section 6. In a carburetter using a needle valve the cross-section of this is also suitably reduced. To prevent pulsations in the air inlet stream, the volume of the body 5 is at least three times that of the working space of an engine e cylinder. The velocity of the engine exhaust stream may also be enhanced by the provision, in the rearwardly directed normal coned mouth 13, Fig. 5, of the .exhaust pipe 18, of a deflector cone 14 giving an annular exit orifice 15 having a cross-section at least equal to that of the pipe 18. The mouth 13 may have a flared rim and may be provided with brazed-on cooling ribs 17 which, together with the rest of the external surface of the mouth 13, may be treated with an anti-rust process involving the application of black paint or enamel in an oven.
