Abstract

727,209. Pumps ; filtering charge ; carburetting-apparatus. LEGROS, R. G. May 14, 1953 [May 29, 1952], No. 13542/53. Addition to 670,933 and 701,022. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (3). The auto-compressor device of the parent Specification for supercharging vehicle &c. engines by the air pressure created by vehicle movement, and comprising a hollow body B with an inlet 1 directed forwardly of the vehicle, a maximum cross-section at least five times that of the inlet 1 and an outlet 2 connected to the engine intake, has the air pressure at the outlet 2 controlled by variation of the flow velocity of air through the inlet 1. As shown, the device has ahead of it a Venturi 18 as described in Specification 701,022, and the inlet flow velocity may be varied by relative axial displacement of the Venturi 18 and body B, by adjustable partial closing of the inlet 1 as by an axially movable cone 35, or by a combination of both means. The cone is moved under the control (a) of a lever 42 manually or automatically adjustable, as into a number of set positions, or (b) of a manometric capsule 52 subject on opposite sides through pipes 53, 54 to the suctions at the Venturi entry 20 or throat 21 and at the inlet 1 respectively so that a position of equilibrium of the cone is automatically obtained for each vehicle speed. In both cases the cone 35 is moved through a rod 36 sliding as in a dust filter 38. The inlet flow velocity may be limited by the air pressure at a point A 0 acting through a pipe 55 on a manometric capsule 58 so as progressively when it exceeds a predetermined value to open a valve 56 against an adjustable spring 61 and so correspondingly destroy the vacuum set up by the pipe 54. Alternatively, the capsule 58 may limit the inlet flow by mechanically moving the Venturi 18 axially. Sleeves 29, 30 connected by ribs 32 guide between them air having an ejector action on air passing between the Venturi 18 and the exterior of the body B.
