Abstract

707,782. Tanks. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. Dec. 5, 1951, No. 28499/51. Class 69 (1) A structure for supporting a spherical tank 20 for storing liquids and/or gases comprises a number of tubular columns 30 arranged circumferentially about the tank and contacting the sphere near the top of each column, each column having a cap 40 and an upper edge 33 both cut to correspond in configuration to the sphere, each weld connection extending continuously about the column and having rounded corners. Preferably each column is cut to a depth not more than two-thirds its diameter, and contacts the sphere below the horizontal equator. The sphere may have thicker shell plates where it is connected to the columns, and the structure may have tie-rods 50 coupled in pairs to some of the columns.
