Abstract

Potassium fluozirconates having a mol. ratio KF : ZnF4 of 1.0-1.2 are produced by incorporating, in an aqueous medium, with ingredients which in the absence of such acid will produce a ratio of over 1.2, at least one of the acids hydrochloric, sulphuric or nitric, the amount of the acid, additional to any produced in the reaction, being sufficient to produce the desired ratio, and in any case being more than 1 mol. monobasic acid, or 0.5 mols. dibasic acid per atom zirconium. Thus, one of the said acids may be added to a mixture of an aqueous hydrofluoric solution of zirconium fluoride and at least one potassium salt, e.g. the chloride, sulphate or nitrate. At least one mol. HF per mol. Zr F4, and not less than 2 mols. monobasic acid or one mol. dibasic acid, per mol. HF, may be used. Alternatively, the mineral acid may be added to a suspension of potassium fluozirconate having a KF : ZrF4 mol. ratio over 1.2 in saturated aqueous solution. Specification 628,050 is referred to.
