Class 104 (2) A safety mechanism in which a carriage is prevented from over-riding the end of either of two relatively movable runways A, B except when the other runway is in a position to receive it has a cam 16 coupled to a movable stop 13 mounted on one runway and a cam-follower 17 coupled to a movable stop 13 mounted on the other runway actuated by mutual engagement when the two runways are brought into alignment so as to actuate the stops and allow a carriage to pass from one runway to the other. The cam 16 and the camfollower 17 are attached to plungers 6 slidable in guides 5 provided with rollers 7. The stops 13 are carried by a cross-piece slidably movable in slots formed in the webs 10 of the runways A, B the sides of which slots have wear plates 15 welded thereto. A bell crank 8 pivotally mounted on a pivot 9 on each runway A, B has an arm 8b which engages a recess 12 formed in the stop 13 and an arm 8a which projects through clearance holes in the runway top flange 3, a base-plate 4 and the plunger 6 to engage fork in a dog 11 mounted in the plunger 6, but slidable thereon against the action of a spring 19 to provide for lost motion. In the normal position the stops 13 fall by gravity into the block position on the lower flanges of the runways and as the runways are moved into alignment the cam-follower 17 rides up an inclined surface 16a of the cam 16 to lift through the bell cranks 8 the stops 13. The stops 13 are fully raised before the cam-follower 17 reaches the apex of the cam surface 16 and any subsequent outward movement is taken up by the lost motion between the plungers 6 and dogs 11. The cam-follower 17 is pressed by the springs 19 into a recess 18 formed in the apex of cam 16 when the runways A, B are aligned. The dog 11 may be fixed on one plunger 6 and the spring 19 dispensed with.
