Abstract

705,761. Fluid-pressure brakes. HOBBS TRANSMISSION, Ltd. Sept. 29, 1952 [Oct. 11, 1951], No. 23684/52. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXIV] In a clutch or brake of the kind wherein a rotating spinner-plate (not shown) is frictionally clam ped against a part (not shown secured to a housing 10, which also rotates in the case of a clutch, but is stationary for a brake, by liquid-pressure applied in a housing-space 11 to a flexible canvas-reinforced rubber or plastic diaphragm 12, acting on a friction-plate 31 through a ring 30, and supported during engage ment on parts of its free face area by frusto-coned plates 17 19 attached to the housing, the support-plates 17, 19 extend radially for a distance of at leas three times and preferably four to eight times the thickness of the diaphragm from the unclampec parts 21, 24 near the beaded or plain peripheries over the free area of the diaphragm. During engagement, the diaphragrr passes through an intermediate straight position. As shown the support-plates 17, 19 also clamp the diaphragm to the housing and one of the clamping surfaces may be ridged. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the plates 17, 19 do not clamp the diaphragm, which is left free in recesses in the housing. Specification 596,908, [Group XXIV], is referred to.
