705,709. Winding pirns. MUSCHAMP, H. L. Aug. 14, 1952 [Aug. 15, 1951], No. 19197/51. Class 120(2) Feed traverse mechanism for a pirn winder comprises a traverse feed screw, driving means therefor including a resiliently-loaded friction brake drive-controlling device and a feeler located between the pirn and the control device whereby contact of the feeler with the pirn relieves part of the load on the friction brake to permit driving of the feed 'screw: A continuously rotated crank i oscillates an arm j and hence a pawl arm k and a pawl m. The arm k by contacting a tongue n<SP>2</SP> on a mask n governing a ratchet wheel h, which drives the feed screw g of the "gain mechanism" of the traverse carriage f, moves the mask to the position drawn in Fig. 1, a further portion n<SP>1</SP> on the mark n engaging a friction pad p<SP>2</SP> carried by a U- shaped former plate p pressed by a light spring q towards the winding centres a, b. When the rotatable feeler r<SP>1</SP> contacts the growing pirns d, the end r<SP>2</SP>. of the feeler presses against the former plate p to permit the mask-portion n' to slip under gravity and so uncover the rachet wheel h so that the next motion of the pawl m will turn the screw g, advance the carriage f and bring the mask back again into the position of Fig. 1. The bottom of the pirn is shaped by an adjustable member p<SP>1</SP>.
