Abstract

704,560. Relief valves. SIEBE, GORMAN & CO., Ltd., DAVIES, Sir R. H., and DAVIS, R. W. G. April 16, 1952 [July 9, 1951], No. 16278/51. Class 135 In a spring-loaded relief valve having manually operable means to adjust the loading of the spring to two independent working settings, the means are located exterior of the valve casing to enable the settings to be changed without dismantling the valve. As used with under-water breathing apparatus, the valve comprises a twopart casing 2, 4, Fig. 1, clamping between its parts a breathing bag 1, and housing a valve closure member 24 loaded by a spring 29. The upper end of the spring abuts an operating member 20 having a pin 30 engageable in an L-shaped slot 31, Fig. 3, formed in a sleeve 16 screwed to the casing. The loading of the spring is initially adjusted by the sleeve 16 which is then locked in position by a nut 17. When the pin 30 engages the top of the vertical limb of the slot 31 the valve is adjusted to its lower working setting and air is automatically permitted to escape whilst the wearer of the apparatus ascends to the surface. On reaching the surface the wearer depresses and rotates the member 20 to bring the pin 30 into engagement with the horizontal limb of the slot 31 to set the valve at its higher setting. At this higher setting further escape of air is prevented, except under abnormal conditions, and the bag 1 keeps the wearer afloat.
