Abstract

In a process for the preparation of base metals which comprises the preparation of an alkali amalgam by electrolysis of a solution of alkali salts in the presence of a mercury cathode, reaction of this amalgam with a solution of metallic salts containing the required metal, separation of the resulting amalgam from excess mercury and decomposition of the separated amalgam by heating, a reducing agent is added to the said solution of metallic salts to prevent the formation of oxides on the metallic amalgam. Alternatively the amalgam of the required metal is formed by direct electrolysis of a solution of metallic salts containing the metal, the reducing agent being added to the solution in the electrolytic cell. This reducing agent should be such that neither it nor its oxidation product enters into disturbing side reactions with the amalgam, e.g. hydrazine or sodium bisulphite. The amount of reducing agent added should be in equivalent proportion to the amount of atmospheric oxygen in the salt solution.
