Abstract
703,986. Knitting-machines. MELLOR, BROMLEY & CO., Ltd. March 19. 1951 [May 5, 1950], No. 11195/50. Class 74 (2) To avoid unnecessary action of a stop motion for a knitting-machine, a pivoted lever 9 over which the yarn passes to the needles. has an arm 18, provided with a slot 21, associated with it so that the yarn engages the end of the slot when urged towards the arm by the lever 9 in the event of slackness of the yarn,. thereby causing the yarn to prevent undue movement of the lever 9 and operation of the stop motion. The end opposite the yarn engaging end of the lever 9 is biased by a weight 11 to pivot the lever 9 and make contact with a member 13 forming part of a switch in the electrical circuit of the stop motion.. The yarn engaging end of the lever 9 may beforked and between the prongs 10 of which the end 20 of the arm 18 depends. Attached to the arm 18 may be a plate 22 which is adapted to. form a loop in the yarn as the lever 9 moves the yarn towards the arm 18 and thereby assist in taking up some of the slackness. The lever 9 is also influenced in the event of the yarn becoming unduly tensioned by a spring 25 which restricts the movement of the lever 9 towards a second member 31 of the switch in the electrical circuit of the stop motion. Alternatively, the arm may comprise two tongues 42, 44, Fig. 5, which cause the yarn when raised by the forked end of the lever 9 to engage the slots 45 and kink into loops to take up the slackness in the yarn and also to increase the friction between the yarn and the device thereby restricting movement of the lever 9.
