[Class 74 (ii)] A straight-bar knitting-machine has a thread layer constructed and arranged to lay its thread in opposite directions along the line of needles by an oscillatory movement about a pivot ; and means for displacing the pivot in the direction of the line of needles during said movement. An unknitted elastic weft thread 7 is laid in between the rib and plain loops of desired courses by a thread layer 5, which swings out from one selvedge, over and down to the other selvedge. The layer is swung by reciprocation of a pinion 20 along a stationary rack 19, the reciprocation being produced by a driving rod 21 (which may be a carrier rod with the carrier removed) operated through its own draw mechanism, which may be rendered inoperative, when desired, by rocking a bluffing lever 27 to act on that end of a connecting rod 26 normally engaging a pin 25. As the layer starts its swing (when the draw is nearly complete), the yarn 7 is held by a spring trapper 14 carried by the frame needle bar and it is also carried over the curved top of a deflector 18. At the end of the draw, the moving layer withdraws the yarn from the trapper and, as the layer is ending its swing, the thread slips off the deflector and snaps down on to the fell of the fabric. The layer is speeded up for the final portion of its travel. The yarn passes to the layer from a tension device comprising a pair of spring-pressed cymbals 9 and a pair of rollers 10, one of which is on a spring-pressed arm 11. The trapper 14 comprises a fixed leaf-spring 15 pressed against a pivoted, spring influenced block 16.
