Abstract

A welding electrode comprises a core, containing 3.5-5 per cent. titanium, 0-0.75 per cent. aluminium, 0-0.1 per cent. carbon, 0-0.35 per cent. magnesium, balance nickel and impurities, covered with a coating containing at least 25 per cent. calcium carbonate and at least 25 per cent. cryolite. The coating may contain 42-62 per cent. calcium carbonate preferably 47 per cent., 55-35 per cent. cryolite preferably 50 per cent., and 1-5 per cent. bentonite, preferably 3 per cent., 100 parts of these ingredients being mixed with 15 parts of sodium silicate (42.5 DEG B<\>ae) and 2 parts invert sugar (43 DEG B<\>ae). The core may contain 4.52 per cent. titanium, 0.43 per cent. aluminium, 0.03 per cent. carbon, 0.012 per cent. magnesium or 4.43 per cent. titanium, 0.43 per cent. aluminium, 0.03 per cent. carbon, 0.14 per cent. magnesium when the deposited metal contains 2.44 per cent. titanium, 0.18 per cent. aluminium, 0.05 per cent. carbon, less than 0.005 per cent. magnesium and 2.23 per cent. titanium, 0.16 per cent. aluminium, 0.04 per cent. carbon, 0.015 per cent. magnesium respectively. An electrode may have the preferred coating and a core of 3.8 per cent. titanium, less than 0.01 per cent. aluminium, 0.04 per cent. carbon and 0.074 per cent. magnesium or a core of 4.5 per cent. titanium, 0.53 per cent. aluminium, 0.03 per cent. carbon and 0.077 per cent. magnesium, the balance in each case being nickel and impurities. A core having 4.5 per cent. titanium, 0.28-1.41 per cent. aluminium, 0.08 per cent. magnesium and balance nickel and impurities is referred to.
