701,882. Cycle brakes. SOC. D'APPAREILS DE CONTROLE ET D'EQUIPMENT DES MOTEURS, S. A. C. E. M. April 23, 1952 [May 21, 1951], No. 10237/52. Class 136(1) In a brake for a bicycle or like vehicle operated by a cable 2 slidable in a flexible sheath 1, one end of the cable being fixed to a cable adjusting drum 8 journaled in plates 7 of the brake element, the drum has a nut shaped extension 18 which is urged by a spring 19 into engagement with a housing in a plate 22 so that the drum cannot rotate, a hand control disc 20 bemg provided to move the drum axially to release the nut from the housing and to rotate the drum to adjust the length of the cable. The housing has an outline obtained by superposing two hexagonal holes of the same size and centre at an angle ot 30 degrees to each other so that the hexagonal nut 18 may fit in the housing in any of twelve different positions. The brake lever 3 is pivoted on a pin 21 which is slidable in a slot 21a in the plates 7. A spring 13 urges the top ends of the brake levers 3, 10 towards each other. The sheath 1 of the cable abuts an element 16 surrounding the pin 21 and the cable 2 passes through a hole in the element and through a diametral hole in the drum 8. The cable is wound at least half a turn round the drum.
