Abstract

701,344. Protective arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan. 4, 1952 [Feb. 23, 1951], No. 329/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (4) In a protective system for series stabilizing condensers in a transmission line, of the kind described in Specification 675,945, comprising (1) a self-clearing blown spark gap shunting the condensers and (2) an electro-pneumatically operated switch adapted to short-circuit the condensers if (a) the spark-gap fails to break down, (b) the fault persists, or (c) the condensers are subject to sustained over-voltage of insufficient value to break down the spark gap, the pneumatic system includes, between the air reservoir and the switch-operating cylinder, a main valve normally biased to the "closed" position but held open by air pressure in the cylinder, there being provided also means permitting air to escape rapidly from the cylinder on occurrence of fault conditions, such as (a)-(c) above. By these means the switch is caused to close very rapidly and is prevented from automatically reopening on clearance of the fault. The switch is re-opened by manual operation of a pushbutton valve which admits air under pressure to the main valve, thereby opening same and re-connecting the cylinder to the pressure system. Specification 674,692 also is referred to.
